2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid: A Very Good First Impression

This fall, a new player was added to the Mazda lineup without fanfare: the CX-50 SUV. We know the model well, and it is now offered in a hybrid configuration. 

We're familiar with this approach and the technology reserved for the CX-50. It comes from one of Mazda's partners, Toyota. The hybrid configuration used in the CX-50 is essentially that of the Toyota RAV4, a benchmark in the world of hybrid SUVs. 

The CX-50 will, therefore, benefit from all the best that the RAV4 hybrid has to offer, with the added bonus of the more assertive styling that is Mazda's norm, as well as superior off-road capabilities in a model with a more rugged vocation.

And the extraordinary thing is that the CX-50 had not been designed to accommodate Toyota's powertrain. They had to rethink certain parameters to create space for the engine under the hood, and they even redesigned the vehicle's entry-level floor to accommodate the batteries. They had to raise the rear seats to fit the battery, which required us to revise the height of the roof at the A, B, and C pillars. 

Indeed, Mazda has done everything possible to offer this solution to its customers. 

Powertrains

The powertrain is a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder, assisted by three electric motors (one on each axle and another for the starter-alternator) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The power output is 219 hp, which is sufficient for this vehicle. Above all, fuel consumption now averages an exceptional 6.2 litres. City driving averages 6.1 litres per 100 km, while highway driving averages 6.4 litres. 

The CX-50's fuel economy is around 50% lower than that of other CX-50s in the range, which use a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine (naturally aspirated or turbocharged). This is truly impressive.
