The Differences in Space Between Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-50

Mazda now offers two similarly priced SUVs that differentiate themselves via their styling and their character, but also by their dimensions. Here is how the 2023 Mazda CX-5 and the 2023 Mazda CX-50 compare in terms of size.

Outside

Looking at exterior dimensions, both the Mazda CX-5 and the Mazda CX-50 appear quite different from one another. Indeed, the CX-5 is shorter overall, has a shorter wheelbase, and is narrower than the CX-50, while also being taller. On the other hand, despite being lower to the ground, the CX-50 has more ground clearance than the CX-5. This has advantages for both models since it makes the CX-5 easier to park and more agile in the city while the CX-50 is more competent over broken terrain and in mild off-roading situations. The lower and wider stance of the CX-50 also contributes to its impressive road manners and handling characteristics.

Inside

Despite the Mazda CX-50 being physically larger than the Mazda CX-5, the latter has a more spacious passenger compartment. This is a testament to the great packaging job done by Mazda engineers on the CX-5 since it offers more headroom and more shoulder room for both front and rear passengers than the CX-50. This makes the CX-5 more comfortable when there are five occupants on board since they have more room to stretch out. On the other hand, the CX-50 benefits from more legroom both in the front and in the rear, which can make it better suited to tall drivers and passengers.

In the cargo compartment

In terms of luggage space, the Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 both have an advantage over each other due to their different dimensions. Indeed, the smaller CX-5 has the most overall cargo volume of the two with up to 1,679 litres of space with both rear seats folded down against 1,594 litres for the CX-50. However, if the rear seats are occupied, the CX-50 is capable of transporting more cargo since it has 889 litres of space behind the rear seats while the CX-5 has 872 litres in the same area.
