The 2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV and PHEV Receive the Top Safety Pick+ Award

Awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Top Safety Pick+ award is the highest distinction that can be attached to a vehicle to highlight its high level of active and passive safety. Here's how the 2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV and PHEV earned it.

Crash tests

The most important elements of the safety tests are, of course, the physical crash tests, which assess the Mazda CX-90's performance under conditions that represent real-life accidents. In both the small- and medium-overlap frontal crash tests and the revised side-impact tests, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 achieved the highest possible scores across the board. This means that the CX-90 MHEV and PHEV are among the safest vehicles on the road, protecting their occupants better than their competitors. In addition, it's worth mentioning that the IIHS updated its side-impact test last year to better represent real-life collisions, which implies an increase in weight and speed for the crash cart. Despite this, the CX-90 was able to achieve the highest possible score on this test.

Evaluation of driver assistance systems

The IIHS also takes into account the performance of the various driver assistance systems available on the vehicles it tests. In the case of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 MHEV and PHEV, the standard front collision avoidance system stood out by preventing or significantly reducing the force of all simulated impacts with another vehicle or a pedestrian, thus earning the highest score. This is important, since it is of course always desirable to avoid a collision altogether rather than rely on the vehicle's passive safety, however effective it may be. Furthermore, the 2024 Mazda CX-90’s headlamps also stood out, as the units installed on top-of-the-range models came out on top.

Safety: a priority at Mazda

That the 2024 Mazda CX-90 performed well in these tests comes as no surprise, since safety is a priority at Mazda, which explains why the CX-9, CX-50, CX-5, CX-30, and Mazda 3 were awarded the title of Top Safety Pick in 2023.
