2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2022 Hyundai Tucson: The CX-5 Blends Unique Performance and Safety

The CX-5 is a crossover that is difficult to ignore. Sophisticated styling, segment-shaking performance, remarkable safety, and advanced technology combine to place the CX-5 on a level that's among the top of its competition. It is also very distinctive and right at home when downtown or in nature.

There is much to discover about the CX-5. Here, we compare it to the 2022 Hyundai Tucson.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 accepts the powertrain challenge

Two powertrains provide excellent choices and handle a variety of driving situations in the CX-5. Four grades feature a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 Tucson offers a similar engine, but it doesn't quite match the torque level of the CX-5. This is important, especially when every bit of torque is needed for optimal driving dynamics.

The CX-5 and the Tucson also have powertrains that reach higher output levels. The CX-5 does this with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that generates up to 250 horsepower and a whopping 320 lb-ft of torque. The Tucson takes a different approach by offering hybrid variants, but both peak at 258 lb-ft of torque with less horsepower (HEV variant) or just a small horsepower increase (PHEV variant) than the CX-5.

When you want peak response and capability in traffic or terrain, the CX-5 is measurably better.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 earns a respected safety designation

Mazda gave the CX-5 with an infusion of safety. Everything from its structure to driver assistance software offers a special amount of coverage. As a matter of fact, IIHS rates the CX-5 as a 2021 Top Safety Pick+. An IIHS rating for the 2022 Tucson is not available, but you can have the peace of mind in any 2021 CX-5 you drive.

IIHS tested the CX-5 in several important categories, including roof strength, crashworthiness and crash prevention. It is effective in pedestrian crash prevention when using Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning and Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection.

Each CX-5 features additional safety technologies and passive systems to help prevent accidents and protect in the event a crash occurs.
