How the new Mazda CX-90 2024 compares to luxury SUVs from Lexus, Volvo and Acura

The new Mazda CX-90 2024 has been attracting a lot of attention since its arrival on the market. The new CX-90 offers Mazda's latest generation of safety and connectivity features, while providing a refined and surprisingly luxurious interior. The new CX-90 is not only Mazda's premium SUV, it's a vehicle that will make traditional luxury SUV buyers think twice about switching to a mainstream brand not only because of the value the new CX-90 offers, but also because it has the technology, versatility, luxury and performance to rival many premium SUV models.

In this article, we look at how the new CX-90 2024 compares to premium SUVs such as the Acura MDX, Volvo XC90 and Lexus RX. As you can see, Mazda has truly designed a spectacular SUV that offers excellent value.

Powertrain comparison

The Mazda CX-90 2024 is the first Mazda model to be equipped with the new 3.3-liter e-SKYACTIV turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine and a mild hybrid system. This powertrain is unique in several respects. Not only does it offer plenty of standard power and a ton of power available on GT-P models, but it also delivers exceptional fuel economy. As the table below shows, the Mazda CX-90 2024 offers more standard torque than the three luxury SUVs compared here, and it's not even the most powerful engine. If you opt for the GT-P model, you get considerably more power and torque than the MDX, XC90 and Lexus RX can offer.

Best of all, you also get significantly better fuel economy despite standard all-wheel drive. With an average highway fuel consumption of 8.4 L/100 km, the CX-90 is more efficient than these three SUVs.

Interior space and load capacity

Once again, the CX-90 shines against its three luxury competitors when it comes to interior space. For example, there's more headroom and legroom up front in the CX-90, and more headroom in the third row. In the second row, passengers also benefit from more generous headroom and legroom.

Cargo space comparison Mazda CX-90 2024

In terms of cargo capacity, the Mazda CX-90 2024 offers more space behind the second row than either the XC90 or Lexus RX. It also offers more total cargo space than either of these models. And while the MDX has slightly more interior cargo space, the difference in third-row cargo volume is only 63 L.

Price and value

This is where the Mazda CX-90 2024 really shines. With a starting price of just $45,900, the CX-90 costs between $13,000 and $15,000 less than the three competitors listed here. What's more, the top-of-the-line GT-P trim, which starts at $63,300, is around $7,000 cheaper than the base XC90 model and a few thousand dollars more than the top finishes in the MDX and RX ranges. But again, this is the top-of-the-line trim, which means you get the most features of any CX-90 and certainly more features than the base versions of the three luxury SUVs compared here can offer.

For example, the top-of-the-range CX-90 trim features ventilated front and second-row captain's seats, a 12.3-inch color center screen with the full range of Mazda Connected Services, maple wood interior trim, premium Nappa leather upholstery and oyster-colored interior roof lighting.

The base CX-90 model is equipped with heated front seats, hill start assist, blind spot monitoring, 18-inch wheels, seating for eight and more. Moving up the range, you realize that you can get features like a heated steering wheel, 10-way power driver's seat, height-adjustable power tailgate, ventilated seats, 21-inch wheels, 12-speaker BOSE premium audio system and rear door sunshades, all while paying tens of thousands of dollars less.

And you get better performance, greater efficiency and more room for passengers inside.
