Differences Between the Mazda CX-90 and the Mazda CX-9

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 joins the Mazda lineup as a new top-of-the-line three-row SUV, a role previously held by the CX-9, which is still offered alongside.

As with the CX-50 and CX-5 duo, the new CX-90 will complement the CX-9 by offering different characteristics that will allow it to appeal to other buyers.

Totally new mechanicals

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 most notably differs from the CX-9 by its entirely new RWD architecture that brings new powertrains and revised dynamics. Were the 2023 CX-9 can only be powered by a turbocharged 2,5L four-cylinder engine also used in other models. Combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission, this engine can deliver up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. Under the hood of the new CX-90, things are very different. The standard powertrain is an all-new 3.3L inline-six-cylinder engine which is also turbocharged and fitted with a 48-volt mild-hybrid. This makes it possible to generate 280 horsepower in the standard version and 340 horsepower in the high-output models. Paired with an also-new eight-speed automatic transmission, this gives the CX-90 a high level of performance an efficiency.

A new Plug-in version

In addition to the new six-cylinder engine, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 can also be offered with a new plug-in hybrid powertrain that is not available on the CX-9. This powertrain uses a 2.5L four-cylinder engine and a 17.8 kWh battery to provide 323 horsepower, 369 lb-ft of torque, and a yet-to-be-announced fully-electric range. This will allow most drivers to complete their entire daily commute without using fuel while also giving the peace of mind of knowing the gasoline-engine is ready to take over at any moment.

A more luxurious vocation

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 pushes the bar even higher in Mazda’s move upmarket when compared with the CX-9. The 2023 CX-9 is already quite a premium vehicle due to its long list of features and its top-of-the-line Signature model which features real wood accents and Nappa leather, but the 2024 CX-90 is even more luxurious and inspired by much more expensive models, such as in the  Signature model, which features stitched decorative fabric panels in addition to the maple wood accents and Nappa leather.
