2021 Mazda3 Turbo vs. 2020 Toyota Corolla

The award-winning Mazda3 has evolved into one of Canada's most acclaimed vehicles. Recently, Mazda improved this already perfect compact car with something that pleases all types of drivers: a turbocharged engine.

Not only did Mazda add a turbo, but it crafted a masterpiece on wheels. The Mazda3 Turbo is set to appear in showrooms in late 2021, leaving many competitors in the dust. Here, we illustrate that point by comparing it to the Toyota Corolla.

The 2021 Mazda3 Turbo elevates to a new performance level

The Mazda3 Turbo receives a turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder engine that develops 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when using premium fuel. The Turbo responds to standard octane with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, providing minimal change between fuels. This engine is standard in all three trims: the Turbo GT, Turbo GT Sport, and 100th Anniversary Edition.

Despite the availability of three powertrains, the Corolla doesn't even flirt with the capabilities of the Turbo. For example, a 1.8 L four-cylinder engine gets just 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque in most of the sedan models. The highest-grade sedans and hatchback make a last attempt with a 2.0L four-cylinder, but it only increases horsepower by 30 and torque even less. The Mazda3 Turbo remains at the top of this competition's power rankings.

Mazda engineers also calibrated the engine especially for the Mazda3. This creates a better synergy between engine and body that enhances performance. There's no question that the Turbo outclasses the Toyota Corolla's power and handling.

The 2021 Mazda3 Turbo has the better drivetrain

The transmission of the Turbo distributes power to all four wheels through the advanced I-Active AWD system. No matter your road surface, the Turbo intelligently sends torque to the right wheels when they need it. Whether you are driving on wet or dry roads, pavement, gravel, or a light trail, the Turbo provides a boost of confidence. However, the Corolla only offers front-wheel drive, limiting your performance options.

With all the capabilities of the Turbo, safety technologies are essential. Each model receives the full suite of i-Activesense driver assistance tools, and owners can opt for the Premium Package that adds several new technologies not found on the Corolla.
