2021 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2021 Ford Explorer: Discover the Value

Many Canadian drivers are switching to Mazda crossovers because of their sophisticated style, luxurious drive, and more powerful engines. The well-equipped CX-9 looks as if it should be in a luxury class, but is priced for a mainstream crossover segment. Three carefully designed grade levels make choosing the right CX-9 easy for you.

Here, we illustrate more about the CX-9 by comparing it to the 2021 Ford Explorer.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 maximizes return on investment

As mentioned, the CX-9 offers a refreshing price range for the design and equipment it offers. When competitors establish price ranges that extend into the premium luxury crossover segment, then you may pay too much for the value offered.

The base CX-9 GS features an MSRP of $40,000. This saves over $4,500 compared to the base Explorer XLT. The CX-9 also includes i-Activ AWD, G-Vectoring Control Plus and more torque.

Going further, the mid-grade CX-9 GS-L has an MSRP that is still lower than the base Ford XLT. The features also stack up.

The Explorer Limited is the next trim up from the XLT, and it is priced starting at $49,799. This cost is higher than the CX-9's top model, the turbo GT. Remaining Explorer models begin at $58,399 and $64,649.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 extends the lead in safety and agility

The CX-9 also delivers some of the highest safety ratings in its class. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety placed the CX-9 through rigorous tests that resulted in a Top Safety Pick+ rating. This isn't awarded lightly, and the Mazda received high marks in crashworthiness, vehicle-vehicle crash mitigation/avoidance, roof strength, cage/structure integrity, and more.

To be fair, the Explorer also rates highly, but the CX-9 fares better in lower leg/foot protection and headlight safety.

But what really sets the CX-9 apart is the many advancements that provide agility, and maneuverability and a dynamic drive that will put a smile on your face. The Explorer is a much blander family hauler that only serves to transport. The CX-9 also delivers more interior refinement that can be compares to a luxury SUV, while the Explorer’s interior uses more basic elements.
