2022 Mazda CX-9 vs 2022 Mazda CX-5 Pricing, Interior Space, and Performance comparison

Mazda has many options on the market right now if you are looking for a sport utility vehicle. Mazda's 2022 Mazda CX-9 and 2022 Mazda CX-5 are likely to be the two most popular sport utility vehicles in its lineup this year. In comparison to the CX-9 which is a three-row midsize SUV, the CX-5 is technically a compact SUV, except it is one of the most spacious in its class.

Obviously, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 will be more expensive than the 2022 Mazda CX-5, but the CX-9 also has more space, more performance, and more features. We aren't going to tell you which of these Mazda SUVs is best, but we will show you how they differ and help you decide which is best for you.

Pricing

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 is more expensive than the 2022 Mazda CX-5, as previously mentioned. Pricing in 2022 shows about a $7,000 difference between the two models in terms of starting price, with the top-of-the-line Mazda CX-5 being $7,000 cheaper than the CX-9.

Both models are offered in roughly the same trims with GS, GT, Kuro, and Signature offered in both lineups with similar features. The CX-9 starts at $41,300 and comes standard with all-wheel drive, while the CX-5 starts at $30,900 and comes standard with AWD standard as well. The Signature version of the CX-9 starts at $53,200, while the Mazda CX-5 Signature starts at $43,900.

Interior space

With all seats in place and the rear seats folded down, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 has more cargo space. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 offers 1,082 liters of cargo space behind the second row seats, while the CX-5 offers 871 liters. The CX-9 has 2,017 liters of cargo space when the rear seats are folded, while the CX-5 has 1,680 liters of cargo space.

Inside, there aren't many differences between the two SUVs. Compared to the CX-5, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 has a bit more rear legroom in the second row with 921 mm vs 1,001 mm. In just about every interior space metric, the Mazda CX-9 is more spacious than the Mazda CX-5 which was to be expected. This is the model to get if you want more interior space or you want an SUV with three rows of seats.

Performance

Both the 2022 Mazda CX-9 and the 2022 Mazda CX-5 offer a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 227 horsepower and over 300 pound-feet of torque. That said, the CX-9 offers this engine as standard equipment while the CX-5 offers it as an option. The base engine in the CX-5 is a non-turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque. Both Mazda SUVs offer plenty of power and performance, and both deliver some of the quickest accelerations and most confident passing in their respective segments.

Fuel consumption is higher on the CX-9, but it has more power. The CX-5 averages 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and on the highway it averages 8 liters per 100 kilometers. The CX-9 averages 11.6 l/100 km in the city and 9.9 l/100 km on the highway. For an engine with over 300 pound-feet of torque, this is quite impressive.

Ultimately, the right choice between each model will depend on your needs. Give us a call today to learn more.
