The 2012 Mazda3 SKYACTIV: only 4.9L / 100km on the highway

While most automakers are turning toward hybrid or electric technologies to improve the fuel efficiency ratings of their fleet, Mazda has taken a different route: SKYACTIV. Looking to optimize its internal combustion engines, transmissions, aerodynamics and pretty much every aspect of its products, the Japanese manufacturer believes it has found the solution.

We learned today that the 2012 Mazda3 sedan featuring a SKYACTIV engine and six-speed automatic transmission will only consume 4.9 litres of fuel per 100 km on the highway and 7.2 L/100 km around town.
The engine, which displaces 2.0 litres, will develop 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque.
If those numbers are exact or close enough to reality, Mazda will have a considerable advantage over the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra.
